The Durham Regional Technology Development Site (Durham RTDS) is a high-calibre collective in Durham Region that collaborates to foster the development, production and application of electric and smart mobility solutions to be adapted by Canadian and global communities.

As part of its mission, Durham RTDS launches challenges geared toward startups and small to medium enterprises.

In May 2022, the Region of Durham launched the Safe and Accessible Transportation Challenge to support the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan—Durham Region’s initiative for creating safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Parsons Corporation, in partnership with AutoGuardian by SmartCone, were the successful applicants for this challenge.

The innovative equipment produced and recommended by this team will be installed at three sites in Durham Region:

• North Oshawa, at Simcoe Street and Conlin Road.
• North Oshawa, at Simcoe Street and Founders Gate.
• Ajax, at Kingston Road and Harwood Avenue.

The equipment, being installed, is comprised of several sensors that capture video, still images, sound, radio detection and ranging (RADAR), light detection and ranging (LIDAR) and environmental data. The data collected is then analyzed to produce safety recommendations. This technology does not capture personally identifiable information. It obscures license plates and faces.
