UPDATE: Safe and Accessible Transportation Challenge

In May 2022, in collaboration with the Durham RTDS, the Region of Durham launched the “Safe and Accessible Transportation” Challenge to support the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan—Durham Region’s initiative for creating safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Parsons Corporation, in partnership with AutoGuardian by SmartCone, were the successful applicants for this challenge.

As a result, their innovative equipment is being installed at two sites in Durham Region:

  • North Oshawa, at Simcoe Street and Conlin Road.
  • Ajax, at Rossland Road and Harwood Avenue.

The equipment is comprised of several sensors that capture video, still images, sound, radio detection and ranging (RADAR), light detection and ranging (LIDAR) and environmental data. The data collected is then analyzed to produce safety recommendations.
